Snow in Summer, Dusty Miller, Jerusalem Star, Snow Plant, Wooly Mouse-Ear Chickweed

Cerastium Tomentosum, Snow in Summer, Dusty Miller, Jerusalem Star, Snow Plant, Wooly Mouse-Ear Chickweed, white flowers, ground covers, grouncover, perennial ground cover

Blooming profusely in late spring and early summer, Cerastium tomentosum (Snow-In-Summer) is a low-growing, short-lived perennial that forms a dense mat of silvery-gray foliage dotted with star-like, pristine white flowers with notched petals. Evergreen, it spreads quickly by reseeding itself and makes a great ground cover for sunny areas.

  • Winter hardy, this low-growing perennial grows only 6-12 in. tall (15-30 cm) and spreads 6-18 in. (15-45 cm).
  • Best in full sun in dry, sandywell-drained soils. Tolerates a wide range of soils, but good drainage is essential. It grows well in cool summer climates and is intolerant of high summer heat and humidity. Drought tolerant.
  • Great choice for rock gardens, edging, ground cover, or containers. Lovely on a stone wall for a cascading effect. Deer resistant!
  • Plants will self-seed in the garden if spent blooms are not removed.
  • Best to shear off flower stems after bloom to prevent self-seeding and maintain a tidy habit.
  • Easily divided in spring or fall.
