Prized for its outstanding spring flowers, Kolkwitzia amabilis (Beauty Bush) is a dense, upright-arching and vase-shaped, fountain-like deciduous shrub. From mid to late spring, it boasts a profusion of small baby-pink flowers with yellow throats for several weeks. They smother the foliage of oval dark blue-green leaves, 3 in. long (7 cm), which turn reddish in the fall. Attractive to pollinators, they are followed by pinkish-brown capsule-like fruits that usually persist on the plant. The shrub remains handsome even after the leaves drop, thanks to its exfoliating light grayish-brown bark, which peels in attractive shreds on the older stems. Easy to grow, Beauty Bush is perfect for background or hedging, or mixed with other large shrubs.

  • Grows up to 6-10 ft. tall and wide (2-3 m)
  • A full sun to part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils.
  • Low maintenance, this plant is also generally pest and disease free. Deer resistant.
  • Perfect for shrub borders, hedges and screens, foundation plantings.
  • Prune immediately after flowering. Cut back flowered growth to strong young shoots lower down. Each year cut out up to 20 percent of aging stems to near the base.
  • Propagate by semi-hardwood cuttings or from suckers.
  • Native to eastern China.
