Temu, Arrayán, Collimamol, Luma, Palo Colorado, Chilean Myrtle, Orange-Bark Myrtle, Soap-Bark Tree, Myrtus luma, Myrtus apiculata
A treasure from Chile and western Argentina, award-winning Luma apiculata (Chilean Myrtle) is a remarkable evergreen shrub or small tree. It is prized for the fantastic shape of its multiple trunks and their luminous, cinnamon bark which glows as it flakes into patches of orange and white. The evergreen foliage of small, broadly ovate, pointed, dark glossy green leaves emits a sweet spicy aroma when crushed. Clusters of small, four-petaled, waxy, white flowers, 1/2 in. across (2 cm), bloom in summer. They are followed by small, edible, purple berries which may be used to make sauces and jams. Beautiful through the seasons, Chilean Myrtle is a striking accent tree. Plant it in a location where the spectacular bark can be admired.
- Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
- Grows up to 6-8 ft. tall and wide (180-240 cm). Can reach 30-50 ft. tall and wide (9-15 m) in its natural habitat. Adds 12 in. per year (30 cm).
- Performs best in full sun or part shade in moist to dry, well-drained soils. Tolerates many types of soil from sandy to heavy clay as long as it is well-drained. Prefers a sunny spot, but grows in semi-shade. Tolerates maritime exposure. Drought tolerant once established.
