Malus 'Purple Prince' (Crabapple)
Crabapple 'Purple Prince', Crab Apple 'Purple Prince'
A very prolific bloomer and fast grower, Malus 'Purple Prince' is a small, rounded, deciduous tree that is perfect for any garden. Opening from bright carmine-red buds, masses of fragrant, vibrant rose-red, single flowers appear in mid-spring, fading slightly to a pleasing rose. Draped in clusters along the upward-spreading branches, they provide a truly spectacular display. The flowers are followed by abundant, purple-blue fruits, 1/2 in. (1.2 cm), that mature in fall and persist into winter. The fruits make good jelly and provide excellent sustenance for wildlife. Emerging purple-bronze in spring, the fine foliage of ovate leaves turns green throughout the growing season before turning golden shades in the fall. A beautiful ornamental tree with excellent resistance to scab and cedar apple rust and good resistance to fireblight and mildew.
- Grows up to 18-20 ft. tall and wide (5-6 m).
- A full sun lover, this tree is easily grown in moderately fertile, well-drained soils. Once established, it is drought tolerant.
- Perfect as a specimen plant, in city gardens or cottage gardens.
- Require only minimal pruning in late winter, to remove damaged, diseased, or misplaced growth.
- Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
