Valued for its herbal use, Matricaria recutita (German Chamomile) is an annual herb boasting finely divided, aromatic foliage and masses of daisy-like flowers throughout the summer. Each fragrant flower features 10-20 white rays surrounding a bright yellow domed center disk packed with yellow florets. German Chamomile is commonly grown in herb gardens for the harvest of its edible flowers, which are used to make the familiar, fragrant chamomile tea. Gather the flowers when fully open, dry them, and store them in an airtight container.

  • Grows up to 1-2 ft. tall (30-60 cm) and 10-12 in. wide (25-30 cm). It will self-seed and keep its presence in the garden year after year.
  • Thrives in full sun in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils. Good drainage is essential to survival. Poor soils are tolerated. Best with regular moisture.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. German Chamomile is deer-resistant.
  • Propagate by seed. Plant seed directly in the garden shortly before last spring frost date
  • Native to Europe, western Asia.
