Nymphoides indica (Water Snowflake) is an aquatic perennial boasting floating, round, flat, emerald-green leaves, 2-8 in. across (5-20 cm). Resembling water lily leaves, they create a lovely backdrop for the paper-white, snowflake-like flowers, 1 in. across (2.5 cm), that arise on stalks above the floating leaves. Several flowers can arise from a single plant. Their upper surface is densely fringed and covered with frilly hairs. Blooming in summer, the blossoms last only one day, but they are produced in succession. Native to tropical areas around the world, Water Snowflake disperses vegetatively when leaves and associated adventitious roots become free-floating for a period of time, eventually sinking to the bottom and giving rise to new plants. In mild winter conditions, this plant can spread somewhat aggressively.

  • Grows up to 3-6 in. tall (7-15 cm) and 12-24 in. wide (30-60 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun in organically rich sandy loams or containers and submerged in 12-24 in. of water (30-60 cm).
  • Great for ponds, and water gardens.
  • No serious pest or disease issue.
  • Plantlets are produced at the leaves and contribute to the vigorous growth of the plant. Monitor the growth and thin as necessary.
  • Propagate by seed or from rooted plantlets produced at leaves.
  • Native to tropical areas around the world.
