Candy Cane Sorrel, Striped-Flowered Wood Sorrel
Native to South Africa, Oxalis versicolor (Candy Cane Sorrel) is a charming bulbous perennial forming a dense mound of fresh green leaves composed of 3 narrow leaflets. Blooming from midsummer to fall, delicate white flowers, 1 in. across (2.5 cm), adorned with a crimson margin on the petal backs, appear above the handsome, clover-like foliage. Whether the flowers are fully open (which they only are in sunny weather) or in the bud, they are equally ornamental. Candy Cane Sorrel is a festive addition to borders, rock gardens and containers.
It is a member of the Oxalidaceae family (wood sorrel family), home to ornamental favorites like the star fruit, little tree plant, violet wood sorrel, redwood sorrel, silver shamrock, and the iconic good luck plant. Other notable members include the striking false shamrock, and purple shamrock.
