Pedicularis densiflora (Indian Warrior) is a low-growing perennial with striking spikes of dark wine-red flowers. Blooming in early to mid-spring, each flower features four stamens and a fused, hooded corolla with a prominent lower three-lobed petal surrounded by hairy bracts. The blossoms are a nectar source for bumblebees and hummingbirds. Emerging red, the lush foliage of fern-like leaves turns deep green over time. It is finely divided, pinnate, mostly basal, with smaller leaves alternating upward along the stem. Native to California and southern Oregon, Indian Warrior grows usually in colonies in shaded deciduous or evergreen forests in lower elevations. It is semi-parasitic and relies on the roots of shrubs such as manzanita and chamise to provide supplemental nutrients. Without a host shrub, Indian Warrior plants grown will still produce their showy flowers, but on smaller, less vigorous plants. Indian Warrior is known for its uses as a powerful skeletal muscle relaxant, as well as its support in treating anxiety, nerve pain, tension, and insomnia.
