Pinus parviflora 'Miyajima', Japanese White Pine 'Miyajima', Miyajima Japanese White Pine, Conifer, Evergreen Tree, Evergreen Shrub, Blue Conifer

Noted for the exceptional blue color of its foliage, Pinus parviflora ‘Miyajima’ (Japanese White Pine) is a dwarf evergreen coniferous shrub of dense, globose habit with a particularly attractive foliage of bright blue-green needles. A slow grower, 3 in. per year (7 cm), this popular Japanese White Pine makes a terrific bonsai plant and is perfect for the rock garden. Named after the Japanese island that has been popular in both bonsai and niwaki for nearly four hundred years, the bonsai represented in our picture has been in training since 1625, making it almost 400 years old (!) and survived the atomic blast in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.

  • Grows up to 3 ft. tall (90 cm) and 2 ft. wide (60 cm) after 10 year.
  • Performs best in full sun in medium moisture, well-drained soils. Plants prefer cool summer climates and dislike heat and humidity. Drought tolerant once established. Tolerates salt spray.
  • Easy to grow, easy to care for and rarely browsed by deer.
  • No pruning required.
  • Native to Japan, Korea.
