One of the largest and most fragrant of the primula species, award-winning Primula florindae (Giant Cowslip) is a long-lived perennial favored by many gardeners with damp and partially shaded gardens. Hardy and easy to grow, it bears large umbels of delicately scented, nodding, rich, sunny yellow flowers (up to 40 per umbel) trimmed with silver farina around the base. Filling the air with their heavenly honey perfume, they bloom over a very long flowering season extending from early summer through late summer, atop upright, sturdy stems and rosettes of long-stalked, broad-ovate, bold green leaves. Native to southeastern Tibet, this Giant Cowslip is a great choice to brighten up a shady area!

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society, this plant is very versatile and can be used in shaded beds and borders, cottage gardens, bog gardens, or along streams, ponds, or water gardens.
  • Easily growing up to 4 ft. tall (120 cm), Giant Cowslip will increase year after year, each plant producing dozens of blooming stems, and naturalizing to form cheerful swathes.
  • Performs best in full sun to part shade lover, it is best grown in humus-rich, neutral to acid, moist soils.
  • Virtually disease-free and low maintenance, deer and rabbits will ignore it!
  • Cowslip seed needs a period of chilling to break dormancy – it, therefore, needs to be sown in late summer or fall, with germination taking place the following spring.
