Primula kisoana var. alba (Hardy Primrose) is a vigorous herbaceous perennial boasting charming umbels of 2-6 pure white flowers, up to 3 in. across (7 cm), in mid to late spring. Borne atop stout, leafless stems, they rise above a foliage mat of thick, wrinkled, light green leaves. Both the foliage and the flowering stems have prominent downy white hairs. This charming woodland plant forms a lovely ground cover from spring to fall and is happy in shady borders.

  • Grows in clumps, up to 6-9 in. tall and wide (15-22 cm). This hardy primrose spreads by stoloniferous rhizomes and self-seeding to form colonies.
  • A part shade lover, it is best grown in humus-rich, consistently moist, well-drained soils. This plant may be grown in full sun in cool summer areas, provided the soil remains moist. May suffer in warm climates where it is best grown in full shade. Intolerant of standing water.
  • This plant is very versatile and can be used in partially shaded beds and borders, in cottage gardens, rock gardens, or along streams and ponds. Perfect under trees or shrubs.
  • Propagate by division in early spring or propagate by seed sown from autumn to spring
  • Deer and rabbit resistant. Watch out for pests such as aphids, vine weevils, slugs, and glasshouse red spider mites. May be affected by primula leaf spot.
  • Native to Japan
