Prostanthera ovalifolia ‘Variegata’ (Mint Bush)

Variegated Mint Bush, Variegated Thousand Flowered Mint Bush

Prostanthera ovalifolia 'Variegata', Variegated Mint Bush, Mediterranean shrubs, Evergreen Shrubs, Purple flowers

Adding a fragrant touch of mint, Prostanthera ovalifolia ‘Variegata’ (Mint Bush) is a bushy evergreen shrub of erect, airy habit, noted for its small, sweetly aromatic, oval, gray-green leaves adorned with a creamy variegation around the margins. In spring, a profusion of eye-catching trumpet-shaped, lilac-purple flowers emerge in terminal clusters at the branch tips. They contrast well with the variegated foliage. Attractive, fast-growing, and easy to grow, Mint Bush does not only reward the gardener with abundant dainty flowers, but its delicately scented foliage is a bonus. Plant it where the fresh fragrance emitted by the leaves can be enjoyed.

  • Typically grows up to 4-6 ft. tall (120-180 cm) and 3-5 ft. wide (90-150 cm).
  • A full sun lover, this plant is best grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Tolerates part shade in hot summer areas. Will wilt when dry but but will perk up quickly with irrigation.
  • Plant in shrub borders, wall-side borders, Mediterranean gardens, city gardens or containers.
  • Generally disease free. Keep an eye out for glasshouse red spider mite.
  • Prune after flowering to maintain dense shape. Hard pruning may damage the plant.
  • Propagate by semi-hardwood cuttings.
  • Prostanthera ovalifolia is native to Australia
