Rhodochiton atrosanguineus (Purple Bell Vine)
Purple Bell Vine, Rhodochiton volubile, Maurandia atrosanguineum, Lophospermum atrosanguineum, Rhodochiton atrosanguineum
Exotic-looking, Rhodochiton atrosanguineus (Purple Bell Vine) is a tender perennial climber with heart-shaped leaves and a profusion of pendant flowers reminiscent of those of a fushia. Produced in succession from late spring to the first frosts, the blooms are quite lovely. Hanging from bright purple-red, bell-shaped calyces, are long, tubular blood-red to purple petal tubes. After pollination, the tubes will fall away but the sepals will expand and turn greenish to rose-red and look elegant for weeks. Held on long petioles, the pale green heart-shape leaves, 3 in. long (7 cm), are adorned with purple edges. They coil around any support. Free-flowering, Purple Bell Vine requires little care. In frost-prone areas, this fast-growing climber can be grown outdoors as an annual.
- Winner of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society for its noteworthy qualities.
- Can quickly grow up to 10-12 ft. tall (300-360 cm) in one season.
- Thrives in full sun, in humus-rich, fertile, moist, well-drained soils. Provide afternoon shade in hot summer areas.
- Generally disease-free.
- This vigorous climber is perfect for a wall, trellis or pergola. Excellent for hanging baskets where it will cascade with charm
- Propagate by seed
