Sagittaria graminea (Grassy Arrowhead)
Grassy Arrowhead, Grass-leaf Arrowhead
Sagittaria graminea (Grassy Arrowhead) is a submerged or marginal, aquatic perennial boasting long, very narrow, grass-like leaves that can reach up to 8 in. in length (20 cm). Blooming freely from spring to fall, clear white flowers appear in whorls atop spindly stalks. Long-blooming, they give way to oval-shaped fruits which do not open to release their seeds when ripe. Native to eastern and central North America, Grassy Arrowhead can be found in the shallow water of ditches, ponds, marshes, or streams. Its underground tubers are prized by ducks, geese, muskrats, and nutria. The seeds are sometimes consumed by ducks. A popular ornamental aquatic plant, Grassy Arrowhead is suitable for small ponds and container water gardening.
- Grows up to 18-24 in. tall (45-60 cm) and 12-18 in. wide (30-45 cm).
- Performs best in full sun in wet, sandy, loamy or clay soils. Will grow in standing water about 2-12 in. deep (5-30 cm).
- A beautiful addition for the margins of ponds and water gardens.
- Propagate by seed sown when ripe or by division of the tubers.
- No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for spider mites and aphids.
- Native to eastern and central North America, ranging from Newfoundland to Saskatchewan south to Florida and Texas.
- Fin where this plant is invasive in the U.S.
