AGM Award
Sternbergia lutea, Winter Daffodil, Fall Daffodil, Lily of the Field, Yellow Amaryllis, Yellow Starflower, Yellow Fall Flower

A fall-flowering heirloom bulb, award-winning Sternbergia lutea (Winter Daffodil) is a clump-forming bulbous perennial boasting solitary goblet-shaped waxy golden flowers, 1.5 in. across (4 cm), in early fall. Resembling giant crocuses, they are borne atop 6 in. stems (15 cm) and are produced at the same time as the glossy, strap-shaped, dark green leaves. The foliage persists through winter in warm winter locations and fades in late spring. Ridiculously easy to grow, Sternbergia lutea provides a charming autumn surprise in borders, rock gardens, and along paths.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society for its outstanding qualities
  • Grows up to 3-6 in. tall and wide (7-15 cm). Naturalizes easily and will come back year after year!
  • Thrives in moderately fertile, dry to medium, well-drained soils in full sun. Sharp soil drainage is essential. Protect from excessive winter wet.
  • Great for border fronts, rock gardens, cottage gardens, Mediterranean gardens, walkways or containers.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for narcissus bulb fly and narcissus eelworm. Unappetizing to deer and rodents.
  • To be planted 5-6 in. deep (12-15 cm) and 4-6 in. apart (10-15 cm) in late summer.
  • Propagate by seed, sown with moderate heat as soon as ripe. Separate offsets when dormant.
  • Native to Southern Europe, Western temperate Asia.
