Tephrocactus articulatus var. papyracanthus (Paper Spine Cactus) is a slow-growing, bushy cactus that develops pine-cone shaped segments, that are loosely attached to each other. Growing vertically, the stems are silver, glaucous, or green in color, and covered in soft, flat, papery spines that resemble raffia fibers or thin ribbons. Although rarely blooming in cultivation, bell-shaped white flowers, adorned with yellow centers, may form during late spring to early summer. The blossoms are followed by brown fruits, up to 2 in. long (5 cm). Easy to grow, this remarkable cactus is perfect for containers. It can be grown as a houseplant, but also grows well outdoors in frost-free climates. Protect from cold, as this species is frost sensitive and only hardy to 15°F (-9°C) for brief periods. Handle with care as the segments are very easily detached from the parent plant.

  • Grows up to 12 in. tall (30 cm).
  • Easily grown in well-drained soils in full sun. Paper Spine Cactus requires as much full, direct sun as possible to prevent thin stems. Water sparingly in both winter and summer, with less irrigation as light decreases. Allow soil to completely dry in between waterings. Drought tolerant.
  • Propagate by stem cuttings, segments, offsets, or occasionally seeds. The easiest method of propagation is either through offsets – which are readily produced by the parent plant – or through the segments, which easily root after being removed.
  • Virtually pest and disease free. Susceptible to fungal diseases if over-watered.
  • Native to Argentina.
