Tilia henryana (Henry's Lime)

Henry's Lime

Slow-growing, Tilia henryana (Henry's Lime) is a medium-sized deciduous tree adorned with a rounded crown clothed in softly downy, broadly heart-shaped, sea-green leaves, up to 5 in. long (12 cm), fringed with long teeth. In spring the leaves unfold a stunning silvery-pink against the naked branches. In early to midsummer, small, fragrant creamy-white flowers are borne in drooping cymes. Rich in nectar, they are highly attractive to bees, who will produce a richly flavored honey. The blossoms are followed by showy nutlets that ripen in late summer. The foliage turns yellow in the fall. Prized for its excellent rounded form and its moderate growth habit, Tilia henryana is a handsome shade, street or lawn tree.

  • Grows up to 20-30 ft. tall and wide (6-9 m).
  • A full sun to part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Prefers moist, fertile, well-drained loams.
  • Keep an eye out for aphids, horse chestnut scale, caterpillars, sawflies, gall mites and phytophthora root diseases.
  • Propagate by seed, layering, grafting or chip-budding onto a suitable rootstock.
  • Native to China
