Hyacinthoides non-scripta (English Bluebells) is a vigorous, bulbous perennial producing small clumps of linear, strap-shaped leaves from which rise tall stems bearing arching, one-sided racemes of 4-16 strongly sweetly scented, nodding, narrowly tubular, bell-shaped, violet-blue flowers, rarely pink or white. Blooming heartily from mid to late spring, English Bluebells go dormant by early summer. Easy to grow, low care, and spectacular when massed, they are a reliable addition to the landscape, where they will happily multiply in optimum growing conditions. Bluebells make an attractive ornamental addition to woodland gardens or sites in semi-shade.

  • Typically forms spreading clumps up to 12-18 in. tall (30-45 cm).
  • Easy to grow, this plant is rarely affected by pests or diseases and is resistant to deer and rodents! Just plant it and forget about it!
  • Plant in average, moist, well-drained soils in partial shade. Tolerates full shade.
  • This charming naturalizer provides color and contrast to the woodland garden and naturalized areas. Spectacular when planted in large drifts. Perfect as a groundcover or underplanting shrubs and roses. Great as cut flowers too!
  • Propagate by seed, sown in pots in a cold frame when ripe, keep shaded, and do not allow to dry out. Alternatively, remove offsets in the summer.
  • Eating may cause severe discomfort.
  • Native to Western Europe
