Tilia x europaea (European Linden)
European Linden, European Lime, European Basswood
Tilia x europaea (European Linden) is a large deciduous tree of broad-columnar habit boasting heart-shaped, broad, dark green leaves, up to 4 in. long (10cm), turning yellow in the fall. In early summer, small, fragrant creamy-white flowers are borne in drooping cymes. Rich in nectar, they are highly attractive to bees. The blossoms are followed by small nutlets that ripen in late summer. Smooth and thin on your trees, the bark develops deep grooves on mature trees. Root suckers often grow around the trunk. European linden is a very old hybrid between two native European lindens, T. cordata and T. platyphyllos. A beautiful shade, street or lawn tree.
- Grows up to 50-70 ft. tall (15-21 m) and 30-50 ft. wide (9-15 m).
- A full sun to part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Prefers moist, fertile, well-drained loams.
- No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for powdery mildew, leaf spots and cankers.
- Promptly remove root suckers as they appear.
