Noted for its beautiful foliage and charming flowers, Vancouveria hexandra (White Inside-Out-Flower) is a creeping, deciduous perennial with delicate, apple-green leaves divided into 9-15 small, heart-shaped leaflets, 1.5 in. long (4 cm). In late spring to early summer, sprays of 10-30 dainty white flowers arch over the foliage on leafless stems arising from the base of the plant. The petals and sepals are turned backwards, exposing the stamens and pistil, hence the common name of Inside-Out Flower. Native to the Pacific Northwest coast, Vancouveria hexandra is a remarkable garden plant for the shade garden. A fine vigorous grower, it makes an excellent ground cover for woodland gardens.

  • Grows up to 12-18 in. tall and wide (30-45 cm). Vancouveria hexandra spreads by underground rhizomes without being aggressive.
  • Performs best in part shade to full shade in humus-rich, fertile, acidic, moist, well-drained soils. Protect from cold, dry winds.
  • Easy to grow, this plant is a welcomed addition to beds and borders, cottage gardens, shade gardens. Excellent as a groundcover.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for vine weevil.
  • Divide in spring or sow seed in containers, in a cold frame as soon as ripe.
  • Native to California, Oregon, Washington.
