American Barrenwort, White Insideout Flower, White Inside-Out-Flower, Northern Inside-Out Flower, Vancouveria brevicula, Vancouveria parvifolia, Vancouveria picta
Noted for its beautiful foliage and charming flowers, Vancouveria hexandra (White Inside-Out-Flower) is a creeping, deciduous perennial with delicate, apple-green leaves divided into 9-15 small, heart-shaped leaflets, 1.5 in. long (4 cm). In late spring to early summer, sprays of 10-30 dainty white flowers arch over the foliage on leafless stems arising from the base of the plant. The petals and sepals are turned backwards, exposing the stamens and pistil, hence the common name of Inside-Out Flower. Native to the Pacific Northwest coast, Vancouveria hexandra is a remarkable garden plant for the shade garden. A fine vigorous grower, it makes an excellent ground cover for woodland gardens.
