A Pretty Border Idea with Alliums and Persicaria

Spring Combination Ideas, Bulb Combinations, Plant Combinations, Flowerbeds Ideas, Spring Borders, Summer Borders

Create long-lasting, pleasing contrasts in your garden. In this sunny border, the striking and architectural, ball-shaped, violet-lilac blossoms of Allium hollandicum 'Purple Sensation' (Ornamental Onion) look fantastic popping up through the lower-growing, pink Persicaria bistorta 'Superba' (Bistort). A wonderful pairing which is also rich in benefits. The leaves of this tall Allium, which wither back quickly after flowering, will then be hidden beneath the leaves of the Bistort.

Spicing up the planting are the deep crimson, pincushion-like flowers of the statuesque Cirsium rivulare 'Atropurpureum' (Plume Thistle). A real magnet for bees and birds, the eye-catching flowers will be on display for months until fall.

Tying the plant combination together is the interesting Nectaroscordum siculum (Sicilian Honey Garlic) with its lovely dangling mauve and green bells. It remains good-looking even after the blooms are done, forming distinctive, tan-colored seedpods that turn upward where each waxy bell once dangled.

Fairly easy to re-create, most plants are deer and rabbit resistant, drought tolerant, low maintenance and make wonderful bouquets for the home. Enjoy this fascinating display for weeks in late spring or early summer!
