Betula 'Fascination' (Birch)

Birch 'Fascination', Betula utilis 'Fascination', Betula albosinensis 'Fascination'

Award-winning Betula 'Fascination' is  a very rewarding birch, which is noted for its attractive gleaming orange copper bark, which peels off to reveal another layer of pink and cream bark. As the tree matures, the bark quickly changes to bright white and contrasts nicely with the tree canopy. Vigorous and fast growing, this medium-sized deciduous tree enjoys a pyramidal habit with stiffly ascending branches. It bears large, dark green leaves, which warm up to bright yellow in fall before they shed for the winter. In spring, tiny yellowish-brown male flowers appear in drooping catkins, 4 in. long (10 cm). Providing interest year round, this birch tree deserves a prominent spot in the landscape where its natural beauty can be enjoyed day after day.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society for its outstanding qualities
  • Grows up to 20-40 ft. tall (6-12 m) and 20-25 ft. wide (6-7.5 m).
  • A full sun or part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in medium to wet, well-drained soils. Tolerates a wide range of soils, including sand or clay, but needs consistent moisture. Consider using soaker hoses and bark mulches to keep the root zones cool and moist.
  • Perfect as specimen plant or in borders, cottage gardens, city gardens and foundation plantings
  • Low maintenance, this plant needs little pruning. If pruning is necessary, prune during the dormant season and avoid pruning in spring when the sap is running.
  • May be affected by sawflies, aphids, rust and leaf spot.
  • Propagate by softwood cuttings or grafting
  • Native to Himalaya
