Blephilia ciliata (Pagoda Horsemint)
Downy Pagoda-plant, Sunny Woodmint, Ohio Horsemint
Reminiscent of the roof of a pagoda, Blephilia ciliata (Pagoda Horsemint) is a clump-forming herbaceous perennial boasting showy clusters of two-lipped, pale lavender flowers resting upon fringed bracts. Blooming for months from late spring to late summer, they are borne in tiered, globular clusters around the stem and attract scores of bees, butterflies and pollinators to the garden. Stout and square, the unbranched stems are lined with lance-shaped, dark green leaves, whitish-downy beneath. All parts of the plant have a pleasant mint fragrance when rubbed or crushed. Long-blooming, easy to grow, low care, Pagoda Horsemint is great for naturalized areas, prairies and meadows and water-wise landscapes.
- Grows up to 12-30 in. tall (30-75 cm) and 9-18 in. wide (22-45 cm). Self-seeds freely.
- Performs best in full sun or part shade in dry to medium, sligthly acidic, well-drained soils. Drought and dry soil tolerant.
- Perfect for cottage gardens, native plant gardens, prairies and meadows.
- Generally pest-free. Keep an eye out for powdery mildew in moist or shaded sites. Somewhat unpalatable to deer and rabbits
- Cut off flower heads before they go to seed if self-seeding is not desired.
- Propagate by seed or division.
- Native to eastern North America.
