Bold and stately, Calamagrostis nutkaensis (Pacific Reedgrass) is a tufted and clump forming, cool-season perennial grass with coarse-textured, arching green leaves that grow up to 3 ft. high (90 cm). Striking flower spikes rise above the foliage in spring to late summer. Purplish at first, the flower plumes turn to a tan color as the season progresses. Evergreen in mild winter areas, Pacific Reedgrass is native to western North America, from Alaska to central California, where it is mainly a coastal species growing in moist areas such as beaches and wetlands.

  • Grows up to 3-5 ft. tall (90-150 cm) and 2-3 ft. wide (60-90 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun or part shade in moist soils. Tolerates a variety of soils. Adapts to full sun in coastal gardens but prefers partial shade in interior plantings. Tolerates salt spray and poor soils.
  • Good background or accent plant for perennial borders, coastal gardens, woodland gardens or meadows.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for rust in over-wet or humid midsummer periods. Deer resistant.
  • Propagate by seed (no treatment) or division.
  • Native to western North America from Alaska to central California.
