Daphne × burkwoodii 'Carol Mackie' (Daphne)

Daphne 'Carol Mackie', Burkwood Daphne 'Carol Mackie'

Prized for its brilliant variegated foliage, Daphne × burkwoodii 'Carol Mackie' (Daphne) is a small, rounded, semi-evergreen shrub with delightfully fragrant clusters of pale pink flowers in late spring. Persisting well into winter, the foliage of oblong, gray-green leaves, 2 in. long (5 cm), is adorned by striking, golden margins that mature to creamy white. Fluttering above the foliage, the blossoms give way to tiny red fruits in fall. A compact and highly ornamental flowering shrub that is perfect for small gardens.

  • Densely branched and rounded, this flowering shrub grows to 2-3 ft. tall (60-90 cm) with a spread of 3-4 ft. (90-120 cm).
  • A part shade lover, this plant is best grown in rich, sandy-humusy, moist, neutral, well-drained soils. Protect from winter winds. Provide summer mulch to keep roots cool. Often slow to establish, this shrub resents transplanting.
  • Plant as a specimen or in shrub borders, or woodland gardens. Great for foundation plantings.
  • All parts are highly toxic if ingested and sap may irritate the skin. Wear gloves and other protective equipment when handling.
  • Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses, toxic to humans. Daphne is deer-resistant.
