Seaside Woolly Sunflower, Lizard Tail
Growing along the Pacific coast of Oregon and California, Eriophyllum staechadifolium (Seaside Woolly Sunflower) is a showy evergreen perennial or shrub of variable size depending on its exposure to harsh coastal wind and saline spray. It may be small and clumpy or quite sprawling. The leaves are shiny and bright green above, silvery-green and finely hairy underneath. They are divided into widely-spaced lobes. In late spring to late summer, clusters of tightly packed brilliant golden-yellow flower heads are borne atop the foliage. They are attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinators. Native to the coastline of Oregon and California including the Channel Islands, Seaside Woolly Sunflower is a plant of the beaches, dunes, and coastal scrub. Ideal for coastal situations, Seaside Woolly Sunflower tolerates full sun, wind, salt spray and drought.
