Genista lydia Bangle® (Lydian Broom)
Lydian Broom, Genista lydia 'Select'
Very floriferous, Genista lydia Bangle® (Lydian Broom) is a compact deciduous dwarf shrub with arching or trailing branches that produces waves of bright yellow, pea-like flowers in late spring and early summer. Flowering is so profuse that the blossoms literally smother the plant. The flowers are born in clusters atop a network of gracefully curving fine stems with soft green, small leaves. Forming a dense mound, this tough and showy native of the eastern Balkans and western Asia has a fantastic texture even when not in bloom. Thriving on neglect, Lydian Broom is particularly useful for tumbling over steps and low walls and drawing attention to it. A tough, drought-proof and resilient plant which is invaluable in Mediterranean gardens.
- Grows slowly, with a sprawling habit, up to 12-24 in. tall and wide (30-60 cm).
- Easily grown in poor infertile, well-drained soils in full sun. Tolerates both acid and alkaline conditions. Excellent shrub for gardens that get little watering.
- Drought tolerant, heat tolerant and deer resistant
- Great for banks and slopes, beds and borders, groundcovers, cottage gardens, coastal gardens, Mediterranean gardens, rock gardens or in containers. Lovely when planted on the edge of a raised bed to cascade over the bed.
- Virtually disease free but subject to Aphids
- Propagate by seed or semi-hardwood cuttings
- Prune after flowering to create multiple branching and good habit.
