Hamamelis 'Brevipetala' (Witch Hazel)

Witch Hazel 'Brevipetala', Chinese Witch Hazel ' Brevipetala'

Hamamelis 'Brevipetala' (Witch Hazel) is a charming hybrid cross between Hamamelis mollis and Hamamelis vernalis.  Hardy, this fine winter-flowering shrub enjoys a medium to large vase-shape with dense clusters of fragrant, frost-proof, rich ochre-yellow flowers in mid- to late winter. Each flower consists of narrow, crinkled, strap-shaped petals with red-purple calyces. The oval dark green leaves turn shades of yellow and orange in fall.

  • This deciduous shrub enjoys a spreading habit and grows up to 9-12 ft. tall and wide (270-360 cm)
  • A full sun to part shade lover, this plant is best grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Prefers organically rich, moist, acidic soils. Some tolerance for clay soils. Best flowering in full sun.
  • Generally pest free. Coral spot may be a problem
  • Mass in mixed shrub borders for dramatic winter blooms. Great flowering shrub for woodland gardens or as screen and hedge. Perfect as specimen plant.
  • Deer resistant, low maintenance
  • Promptly remove any suckers to prevent spread.
  • Prune in spring after flowering to control shape and size.
  • Propagate by grafting
