Hardy, Hamamelis 'Brevipetala' (Witch Hazel) is a deciduous shrub or small tree of upright when young, becoming rounded with age. It boasts dense clusters of fragrant, frost-proof, rich orange-yellow flowers in late winter and early spring. Rich with a strong and spicy scent, each flower consists of narrow, crinkled, strap-shaped petals with red-purple calyces. The oval dark green leaves turn shades of yellow and orange in fall. Introduced in 1935, this fine winter-flowering shrub is a charming hybrid cross between Hamamelis mollis and Hamamelis vernalis.
- Grows up to 9-12 ft. tall and wide (270-360 cm)
- A full sun to part shade lover, this plant is best grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Prefers organically rich, moist, acidic soils. Some tolerance for clay soils. Best flowering in full sun.
- Mass in mixed shrub borders for dramatic winter blooms. Great flowering shrub for city gardens, cottage gardens, or as a screen and hedge. Perfect as a specimen plant.
- Generally pest free. Keep an eye out for honey fungus and coral spot.
- Deer resistant, low maintenance
- Promptly remove any suckers to prevent spread.
- No regular pruning is required. Simply remove any dead, damaged, or weak shoots. Prune in spring after flowering if you need to control shape and size.
