Inula hookeri (Hooker Inula)

Elecampane, Hooker Inula

Inula hookeri, Elecampane, Hooker Inula, Yellow Flowers

Flowering freely in summer, Inula hookeri (Hooker Inula) is a clump-forming, slowly spreading perennial boasting large, 3 in. across (8 cm), finely rayed, bright yellow flowers from mid-summer to early fall. Usually clustered in groups of 1-3 flowers, each flower features a dark central disc surrounded by fine yellow rays. Inula hookeri is ideal for attracting wildlife; butterflies love the flowers and birds eat the seedheads. The showy blossoms are borne atop leafy stems above a broad, mounding clump of furry, mid-green leaves. Tolerant of most garden soils, Inula hookeri is a great companion plant for heleniums, red hot pokers, monardas, and echinaceas.

  • Grows up to 30 in. tall (75 cm) and 18 in. wide (45 cm). Will colonize widely.
  • Enjoys part shade in deep, fertile, moist well-drained soils.
  • Well-suited for beds and borders, cottage gardens, wildlife gardens, prairies, and meadows.
  • Inula hookeri can be invasive so site with care.
  • No serious pest or disease issue. Keep an eye out for powdery mildews.
  • Cut back after flowering.
  • Propagate by seed in pots in a cold frame in spring or autumn. Propagate by division in spring or autumn.
  • Native to the Himalayas.
