Pelargonium sidoides (African Geranium)

African Geranium, Kalwerbossie Geranium, Pelargonium sidifolium


Visually appealing even when not in flower, award-winning Pelargonium sidoides (African Geranium) is an evergreen, tender perennial forming a compact rosette of heart-shaped, velvety, silver-gray leaves edged in exquisite scallops. Blooming from early summer to frost, small, butterfly-shaped, crimson-black flowers are produced atop wiry stems, well above the fragrant foliage. This delicate Pelargonium blooms year-round in mild climates. Perfect for rockeries, this is also an excellent container plant.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society
  • Grows up to 10-12 in. tall and wide (20-30 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun in moderately fertile, neutral, well-drained soils. In hot climates, provide afternoon shade. Irrigate regularly to occasionally spring through summer. Drought tolerant, once established.
  • Perfect addition to beds and borders, cottage gardens, city gardens, Mediterranean gardens or containers.
  • Virtually disease free. Watch for aphids.
  • Deadhead and remove yellowing leaves. Propagate by cuttings in spring and summer.
  • Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
  • Native to South Africa
