Pelargonium odoratissimum (Apple Geranium)

Apple Geranium, Nutmeg Geranium, Sweet-Scented Pelargonium, Peppermint Pelargonium, Apple-Scented Geranium, Apple-Rose-Scented Geranium

Very aromatic, award-winning Pelargonium odoratissimum (Apple Geranium) is a low-growing evergreen tender perennial with a short main stem and trailing flowering branches. They are clothed with rounded, apple-scented, light green leaves, up to 2 in. across (5 cm). The leaves are covered with fine short hairs making them soft to the touch. Blooming from spring to summer (throughout the year except for midsummer in its native environment), small star-shaped white flowers are produced in clusters above the fragrant foliage. Their two upper petals are adorned with red veins. Perfect for containers and small spaces, Apple Geranium can be grown successfully indoors too.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society
  • Grows up to 10-12 in. tall (20-30 cm) and 24-36 in. wide (60-90 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun in fertile, neutral to alkaline, well-drained soils. Afternoon shade is appreciated in hot climates. Provide good ventilation, and water moderately during the growing season from spring to summer, and only sparingly in winter. Drought tolerant, once established.
  • Perfect addition to beds and borders, city gardens, coastal gardens, cottage gardens, Mediterranean gardens or containers.
  • Keep an eye out for vine weevil larvae, leafhopper, root mealybugs, whitefly, grey moulds, pelargonium rust, and leafy gall.
  • Deadhead and remove yellowing leaves. Propagate by seed, sown in late winter and grown on in a protected environment such as a heated greenhouse, or by softwood cuttings from spring to autumn.
  • Native to South Africa
