Peltandra virginica (Green Arrow Arum)
Tuckahoe, Green Arrow Arum, Arrow Arum, Green Arum, Peltandra tharpii
Peltandra virginica (Green Arrow Arum) is an aquatic perennial forming a clump of long-stalked, arrow-shaped, glossy, dark green leaves, 10 in. long (25 cm) on stems rising to 24 in. tall (60 cm). From mid-spring to early summer, tiny greenish-yellow flowers appear on finger-like spadices, 3-6 in. long (7-15 cm). Each spadix is enveloped by a pointed, leaf-like, greenish-white spathe to 8 in. long (20 cm) and borne atop a statuesque stalk. The blossoms give way to blackish berries that attract wood ducks and king rails. Native to North America, Green Arrow Arum occurs naturally in wet areas including swamps, bogs, sloughs, marshes, ditches, and pond-lake-river margins. It can be frozen in the pond over winter. A strong grower, Green Arrow Arum is a lovely foliage plant for ponds, water, or bog gardens.
- Grows up to 18-24 in. tall and wide (45-60 cm). Slowly spreads, but does not aggressively colonize in a water garden the way many aquatic plants do.
- Thrives in full sun to part shade in wet soil or in standing water no deeper than 6 in. (15 cm). Tolerates heavy shade. This plant may also be grown in consistently moist boggy soils.
- Generally pest and disease free.
- Propagate by seed or division.
- Native to eastern and central North America.
