A very showy bog orchid, Platanthera grandiflora (Greater Purple Fringed Orchid) is a stout herbaceous perennial boasting racemes of up to 55 pink to purple (rarely white) flowers. The showy flowers consist of three lobes and a labellum that is deeply fringed. Blooming from early to late summer, they are visited by swallowtail butterflies and moths. The inflorescences are borne atop unbranched leafy stems clad with 2-6 narrow pointed leaves. The flowers give way to slender pods packed with thousands of small seeds maturing in the fall. Native to eastern North America, Platanthera grandiflora is primarily a wetland species and can be found in moist forests and fields, marshes, bogs, and swamps. Stunning in the summer bog garden.
