Pogonia ophioglossoides (Rose Pogonia) is a delicate, sweetly fragrant orchid boasting an erect, slender stem bearing a single pink (sometimes white) flower, 1 in. across (2.5 cm), in late spring to late summer. Each flower is composed of 3 elliptic sepals, 2 oblong petals and a showy lip veined with crimson purple and adorned with dark pink fringes. The blossoms emerge just above a single, clasping, lance-shaped leaf, 4 in. long (10 cm), near the top of the stem. They are mainly pollinated by bees and bumblebees. Pogonia ophioglossoides occurs in sphagnum bogs, meadows, pine savannas, flatwoods, and wet prairies from Newfoundland to southern Ontario and Minnesota, then south to southeast Texas and east to southern Florida. Rose Pogonia spreads by above ground runners and offsets to slowly form a charming colony under optimum growing conditions. Perfect for a wet sunny meadow or a bog garden with acidic soil.
- Grows up to 12-24 in. tall (30-60 cm) and 24-36 in. wide (60-90 cm).
- Performs best in full sun in moderately acidic, consistently moist soils. Water with rain water or distilled water if your water source is alkaline. Apply a winter mulch of pine needles, peat moss, or other acidic mulch
- A beautiful addition to bog gardens , near pond areas, containers.
- Propagate by root division.
