Rhamnus californica (California Coffeeberry)
California Buckthorn, California Coffeeberry, Frangula californica
Native to the western United States, Rhamnus californica (California Coffeeberry) is an elegant, dense evergreen or semi-deciduous shrub of low and spreading to tall and upright habit, depending on its environmental conditions. Clusters of inconspicuous, small yellow-green flowers, each with 5 petals, are produced in spring. They are followed by copious berries loved by birds and other wildlife. The berries turn from lime green to red and then to black as they mature. The dark red branches are clothed with lovely green elliptical leaves, 1-3 in. long (2-7 cm), which contrast well with the colored twigs and berries. A most beautiful western native that is easy to grow, drought tolerant, and easy to maintain. It is useful for erosion control on dry steep hillsides. It also makes a lovely hedge as it tolerates pruning well. Since it is fire retardant when given enough moisture, it can be planted near houses.
- Grows up to 6-15 ft. high (180-450 cm) and 5-15 ft. wide (150-450 cm).
- A full sun to part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in a wide variety of soil types. Coffeeberry generally grows on dry, sandy or rocky slopes in ravines and on hillsides and tolerates sand, clay, and even occasional seasonal flooding. Requires little to no water after establishment, although an occasional deep soaking is appreciated. Water maximum twice per month in summer after the plant is established. Drought tolerant .
- Perfect for banks and slopes (erosion control), as a specimen or accent plant, hedges or as a ground cover.
- Subject to few pests and diseases.
- Can be pruned to control size or shape.
- Propagation by seed or cuttings.
- Native to the western United States, including Arizona, California, New Mexico, Nevada and Oregon.
