Saururus chinensis (Chinese Lizard Tail)

Lizard's Tail, Chinese Lizard Tail

Saururus chinensis, Lizard's Tail, Chinese Lizard Tail, White Flowers

Saururus chinensis (Chinese Lizard Tail) is a rhizomatous, marginal aquatic perennial boasting attractive, papery, ovate, green leaves, 3-7 in. long (7-17 cm), adorned with showy white splotches in the upper part of the plant. In early to late summer, slender, nodding spikes of tiny, creamy-white flowers resembling lizard tails are on display. They give way to small green fruits. The flowers, leaves and roots are pleasantly aromatic. Native to wetlands in eastern Asia, Chinese Lizard Tail is a fine choice for a boggy area of the garden and adds long-lasting interest to the water garden.

  • Grows up to 12-36 in. tall and wide (30-90 cm). Unrestrained rhizomes will spread to form colonies.
  • Thrives in full sun or part shade in boggy ground or pond margin in water no deeper than 6 in. (15 cm). Tolerates full shade.
  • Great for water gardens, bog gardens, along ponds and streams.
  • Virtually pest and disease free. Deer and rabbit resistant.
  • Propagate by seed or by division in spring. Divide regularly to maintain vigor.
  • Native to China, Japan, Korea, India, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and The Philippines.
