Thunbergia alata (Black-Eyed Susan Vine) is a vigorous twining evergreen vine, often grown as an annual, with lush heart-shaped green leaves and attractive single yellow-orange flowers, 2 in. across (5 cm), adorned with dark purple-black throats. Borne in the leaf axils, they bloom throughout the summer and fall. Various cultivars offer flowers in shades of red through pink, apricot, pale yellow, and cream, all with the typical dark throat. Prized for its fast climbing habits, Black-Eyed Susan Vine is perfect to hide an unforgiving fence, scramble through arbors and trellises, and looks stunning in hanging baskets.

  • Will grow up to 3-8 ft. tall (90-240 cm) and 3-6 ft. wide (90-180 cm) in one season (grown as an annual), and up to 20 ft. tall (6 m) in frost-free areas.
  • Thrives in organically rich, fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun. Appreciates afternoon shade in hot summer areas.
  • Black-Eyed Susan Vine requires support on which to climb such as arbors, trellises, or fences. Great in containers, or hanging baskets. Perfect in cottage gardens or Mediterranean gardens.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for scale, spider mites, and whiteflies on indoor plants.
  • Propagate by seed.
  • Thunbergia alata is considered an aggressive invasive plant in Australia, Japan, Singapore, Costa Rica, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, and numerous islands in the Pacific including Hawaii and French Polynesia.
  • Native to Tropical Africa.
