Thunbergia grandiflora (Blue Trumpet Vine) is a vigorous twining evergreen vine, often grown as an annual, with large, heart-shaped, bright green leaves, 4-8 in. long (10-20 cm), and attractive trumpet-shaped lavender-blue flowers, 3 in. across (7 cm), adorned with pale yellow or white throats. Born in elongated clusters on long, drooping branches, they bloom throughout the summer and fall, year-round in tropical climates. Prized for its fast climbing habit, Blue Trumpet Vine is perfect for hiding an unforgiving fence or scrambling through arbors and trellises and looks stunning in hanging baskets.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • Will grow up to 6-8 ft. tall (180-240 cm) in one season (grown as an annual), and up to 30 ft. tall (9 m) in frost-free areas.
  • Thrives in organically rich, fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun. Appreciates afternoon shade in hot summer areas.
  • Blue Trumpet Vine requires support for climbing, such as arbors, trellises, or fences. Great in containers or hanging baskets. Perfect in cottage gardens or Mediterranean gardens.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for scale, spider mites, and whiteflies on indoor plants.
  • Propagate by seeds and softwood cuttings.
  • Thunbergia grandiflora has been included in the Global Invasive Species Database.
  • Native to India.
