Putting on a dramatic show, award-winning Woodwardia radicans (European Chain Fern) is an evergreen fern adorned with tall, gracefully arching, bipinnate divided fronds, up to 5 ft. long (150 cm). The tips of the fronds sport one or several bulbils. A popular species in mild climates as a result of its imposing architectural fronds.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society for its outstanding qualities
  • Grows up to 3-4 ft. tall (90-120 cm) and 2 ft. wide (60 cm).
  • Performs well in part shade in neutral, moderately fertile damp soil. In frost prone areas shelter from cold, drying winds and protect in winter with a dry mulch.
  • Perfect for beds and borders, wall-side borders, city gardens, coastal gardens, cottage gardens.
  • Generally pest and disease free.
  • Cut down old fronds when they deteriorate
  • Propagate by spores, sow spores at 61°F (16°C) in late summer or early autumn; remove bulbils in autumn or divide in spring.
  • Native to Europe.
