A Casual Border with Poppies, Tickseed and Mullein

Plant Combinations, Prairie Planting Ideas, Summer Borders, Spring Borders

This prairie-style planting combines easy-to-grow annuals and perennials in an exuberant mix of forms and colors. Blooming for months, the bright yellow flowers of Coreopsis tinctoria (Tickseed) are beautifully combined with the cheerful red blossoms of Papaver rhoeas (Corn Poppy). The decorative seedpods left by the faded Papaver orientale 'Marlene' bring visual interest, long after the last petal of this charming poppy has been dropped.

Adding a delicate airiness to the planting, Orlaya grandiflora (White Lace Flower) gracefully mingles with them, adding unmatched elegance with its sparkling white flowers floating above the lush, finely divided foliage.

Stretching up into the sky, Verbascum olympicum (Greek Mullein) displays its spectacular candelabras of golden-yellow blossoms. When the bee-friendly flowers fade, the remaining multi-branched skeleton makes one of the most arresting fall and winter silhouettes in the garden.

All plants are deer resistant, drought tolerant and low maintenance. Most make lovely fresh bouquets to be enjoyed at home.
