A Super Climbing Trio with Clematis and Roses

Planting Roses, Rose Gardening, Designing with Roses, English Roses

Color your walls or fences with plants! With its sky blue flowers, Clematis 'Perle d'Azur' is a popular large-flowered hybrid clematis that blooms continuously from June to October and is a beautiful match for the popular apricot-pink Rose 'Compassion' or the repeat-flowering climbing Rose 'A Shropshire Lad'. They are complemented here with the shell pink blossoms of Clematis 'Comtesse de Bouchaud', for a richer palette of color and extended blooms.

Climbing roses and clematis are perfect companions. They happily share the same arch or trellis, both reaching for the sun. They have the same natural needs, require the same growing conditions, and benefit from the same fertilizers. They are often of similar sizes with the result that neither swamps the other. They also complement one another. While the fragrance is rare in Large Flowered clematis, it is fairly common in roses. When combined, they often look many times more beautiful than on a standalone basis.
