Acer palmatum 'Omure-Yama' (Japanese Maple)
Japanese Maple 'Omure-Yama', Acer palmatum 'Omurayama'
Noted for its spectacular cascading branches and striking fall color, Acer palmatum 'Omure-Yama' is a particularly interesting Japanese Maple. First, it changes from an upright habit when young to a semi-pendulous form at maturity, when its graceful, long new shoots start cascading down. This distinctly spreading-weeping habit leads it to create a wide, drooping canopy over time. The deeply toothed and serrated leaves are equally beautiful. Emerging pale green in spring with an orange cast at their tips, they turn brilliant green in summer before turning striking gold interlaced with orange and scarlet shades. Famed for its unique willow tree form and glorious fall color, 'Omure-Yama' is an elegant and showy addition to the landscape.
- Grows up to 10-20 ft. tall and wide (3-6 m).
- A full sun or part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in moist, organically rich, slightly acidic, well-drained soils. Mulch helps retain soil moisture and keep roots cool. Best leaf color in partial shade, although full sun can be tolerated. Leaf scorch can be caused by a lack of soil moisture or excessive exposure.
- Perfect as a specimen plant in cottage gardens, city gardens, or Japanese gardens.
- Low maintenance, this plant needs little pruning. If pruning is necessary, prune during the dormant season and avoid pruning in spring when the sap is running. Fertilize in spring before the leaves emerge.
- May be affected by horse chestnut scale, aphids, verticillium wilt.
- Propagate by grafting or softwood cuttings
