Asarum hartwegii (Sierra Wild Winger)

Sierra Wild Ginger, Hartweg's Wild Ginger, Marbled Wild Ginger

Asarum hartwegii, Sierra Wild Ginger, Hartweg's Wild Ginger, Marbled Wild Ginger, groundcover, evergreen groundcover

Asarum hartwegii (Sierra Wild Winger) is an evergreen rhizomatous perennial boasting heart-shaped, glossy green leaves, 2-4 in. wide (5-10 cm), with conspicuous silver veining. In late spring to early summer, fascinating pitcher-shaped, dark chocolate flowers with tail-like lobes are produced beneath the foliage. Sierra Wild Winger spreads slowly by creeping rhizomes to create a lush aromatic carpet in moist shady areas. A terrific groundcover but excellent drainage is a must.

  • Grows up to 3 in. tall (7 cm) and 10 in. wide (25 cm).
  • A part shade to full shade lover, it is best grown in average, neutral to acidic, moist, well-drained soils.
  • Sierra Wild Ginger makes a great ground cover for shady areas of woodland gardens and is perfect for underplanting shrubs, or edging.
  • Virtually pest and disease free but keep an eye out for slugs and snails which could damage the attractive foliage.
  • Native to California and Oregon.
