Noted for its superb foliage, Asarum splendens (Chinese Wild Ginger) is a vigorous rhizomatous perennial boasting large, elongated, heart-shaped, dark green leaves splashed with shimmering silver. Deep purple beneath, they remain semi-evergreen through mild winters and a new set of leaves is produced in spring, covering the previous year’s growth. In early spring, dark chocolate-brown and purple cup-shaped flowers, 2 in. wide (5 cm), are produced under the foliage at soil level. Asarum splendens is an outstanding Chinese species that forms a thick mat of foliage, making it an ideal ground cover for shady gardens. It is also great-looking in containers. Deer resistant.

  • Grows up to 5-8 in. tall (12-20 cm) and 10-16 in. wide (25-40 cm).
  • A part shade to full shade lover, it is best grown in humus-rich, neutral to acidic, moist, well-drained soils.
  • Chinese Wild Ginger makes a great ground cover for shady areas of woodland gardens, rock gardens and is perfect for underplanting shrubs or containers.
  • Virtually pest and disease free but keep an eye out for slugs and snails which could damage the attractive foliage.
  • Propagate by seed in containers in a cold frame as soon as ripe. Can also be propagated by division in early spring
  • Native to China
