Chamaemelum nobile (Chamomile) is a mat-forming perennial boasting finely divided, aromatic leaves and masses of small daisy-like flowers throughout the summer and into early fall. The feathery foliage exudes a ripe apple scent when bruised. Cold hardy, Chamaemelum nobile is such a densely carpeting plant that it can be used as a groundcover or as a lawn substitute. It can be regularly mowed, but however, tolerates only minimal foot traffic. Grow it between stepping stones or as an edging. The flower may be harvested and dried to make chamomile tea. Gather the flowers when fully open, dry them and store them in an airtight container.

  • Grows up to 3-6 in. tall (7-15 cm) and 10-12 in. wide (25-30 cm). Can spread aggressively (by creeping stems) when happy.
  • Thrives in full sun to part shade in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Drought tolerant once established.
  • Good as a groundcover, for beds and borders, rock gardens or cottage gardens.
  • No serious pest or disease issues.
  • Trim regularly.
  • Propagate by seed. Division for non-flowering cultivars.
  • Native to Western Europe.
