Chlorophytum comosum 'Vittatum' (Variegated Spider Plant)
Variegated Spider Plant, Variegated Spider Ivy, Variegated Ribbon Plant
Adding a bright note year-round, Chlorophytum comosum 'Vittatum' (Variegated Spider Plant) is a very ornamental, rhizomatous, evergreen perennial featuring a basal rosette of arching, narrow leaves, up to 18 in. in length (45 cm), adorned with central creamy-white stripes. Small, white, starry flowers are borne in loose panicles above the gracefully cascading foliage. Plantlets are usually formed at the flowering nodes. Native to South Africa, Variegated Spider Plant is primarily grown for its attractive foliage. Very popular in cultivation due to its drought-tolerance and its relatively disease and pest free nature, it is incredibly easy to grow. This is probably the most cultivated houseplant in the world. It also looks great in hanging baskets or container displays in summer
- Winner of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
- Grows up to 1-2 ft. tall and wide (30-60 cm).
- In warm areas, it is easily grown outdoors in light shade in well-drained soils. Tolerates a wide range of conditions, including dry soils. Water freely when in growth, but keep dryer in winter. Drought tolerant.
- Indoor plants need bright indirect sunlight, regular watering to keep the soil moist, and temperatures between 55-70°F (12-21°C). Do not over fertilize as heavily fertilized plants may not form as many new plantlets.
- In the garden it grows best under trees or on shady embankments. Great for beds and borders, Mediterranean gardens or containers.
- Generally pest and disease free.
- Propagate by seed, root plantlets or by division. Repot when it has outgrown its pot in winter.
