Daphne cneorum (Garland Flower)
Rose Daphne, Garland Flower, Sweet-Scented Daphne
Prized for its flowering effect, Daphne cneorum (Garland Flower) is a trailing evergreen shrub boasting dense clusters of fragrant, bright pink flowers in spring with sporadic blooms in summer. Flowering is so profuse that the blossoms literally smother the plant. The long prostrate branches are covered with narrow glossy green leaves, up to 1 in. long (2.5 cm). Garland, Flower is a lovely ornamental shrub for the rock garden, in front of a border, or along a pathway.
- Grows up to 6-12 in. tall (15-30 cm) and 24-36 in. wide (60-90 cm).
- A full sun or partial shade lover, this plant is best grown in fertile, moist, neutral to alkaline, well-drained soils. Protect from winter winds. This shrub resents transplanting.
- A fine choice for beds and borders, city gardens, coastal gardens, or rock gardens.
- No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for leaf spots.
- Prune immediately after flowering. Top dress with compost or similar material to encourage additional rooting of stems.
- Propagate by semi-ripe cuttings or grafting. Try layering in spring.
- All parts are highly toxic if ingested and sap may irritate the skin. Wear gloves and other protective equipment when handling.
- Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses, toxic to humans.
- Native to Europe.
