Fremontodendron californicum (California Flannelbush)
California Flannelbush, California Fremontia, Flannel Bush
Fast-growing and spectacular in bloom, Fremontodendron californicum (California Flannelbush) is a broadleaf evergreen shrub or small tree of sprawling, irregular shape, boasting a profusion of flamboyant yellow flowers from late spring to early summer. Borne along the branches, the large, saucer-shaped blossoms, 3 in. across (7 cm), feature 5 showy sepals that turn orange tints as they mature. Attractive to butterflies, they give way to persistent, conical seed capsules covered with bristly rust-colored hairs. The foliage of leathery, rounded, lobed leaves, 4 in. long (10 cm), is dark green above and felted beneath with bristly hairs. Contact with the hairs should be avoided as they can be irritating to the skin and eyes. Plant California Flannelbush away from patios and paths. Excellent on dry hillsides or cascading over a stone wall.
- Grows up to 8-18 ft. tall (240-540 cm) and 6-10 ft. wide (180-300 cm). Grows up to 36 in. per year (90 cm).
- Performs best in full sun in gravelly, poor-to-average, sharply well-drained soils. Appreciates some light shade at the heat of the day. Water sparingly. Established plants have excellent drought tolerance.
- A charming addition to beds and borders, hedges, and Mediterranean gardens.
- Virtually pest and disease free. Keep an eye out for root rot or crown rot diseases from too much moisture. Deer resistant.
- Tolerant of pruning to control size and shape. Wear gloves when pruning.
- Propagate by seed or softwood cuttings.
- Native to California, western Arizona, and northern Baja California.
