Helenium amarum (Yellow Sneezeweed) is a bushy annual bringing weeks of color from mid-spring to early fall. Its erect, branching stems are clothed with alternate, very fine, almost-threadlike leaves, 3 in. long (7 cm), and topped with eye-catching daisy flowers. The flowers, 3 in. across (7 cm), feature 5-10 bright yellow, wedge-shaped, drooping rays surrounding a prominent, yellow center disk that is covered with golden pollen and attracts butterflies. Helenium amarum is terrific for hot sunny rock gardens and ideal for xeriscape gardening.

  • Grows up to 12-24 in. tall (30-60 cm) and 10-16 in. wide (25-40 cm). Will self-seed readily in the landscape.
  • Performs best in full sun to part shade in sandy to gravelly, dry to medium, well-drained soils. Best flower production in full sun. Drought and dry soil tolerant.
  • Looks stunning planted in drifts in borders, cottage gardens, or naturalistic areas such as prairies or meadows.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for powdery mildew, leaf spot or rust.
  • Deadheading will extend the flowering season.
  • Native to the United States.
