Herniaria glabra (Rupturewort)

Rupturewort, Smooth Rupturewort, Green Carpet

Herniaria glabra, Rupturewort, Smooth Rupturewort, Green Carpet, evergreen ground cover, evergreen groundcover, drought tolerant groundcover, ground covers,

Low maintenance and almost indestructible, Herniaria glabra (Rupturewort) is a spreading evergreen perennial forming a dense carpet of tiny, succulent leaves. Bright green in most seasons, the foliage turns bronze in winter, providing further seasonal interest. Insignificant tiny green flowers appear nestled amongst the foliage in late spring to early summer. Easy-care, this tough little plant tolerates foot traffic and is a good choice for growing between flagstones or growing as a lawn substitute.

  • Grows only 2-3 in. tall (5-7 cm) and up to 2 ft. wide (60 cm). Will self-seed without becoming invasive.
  • Performs best in full sun to part shade in well-drained soils. Rupturewort has a long taproot that holds moisture well and makes it pretty drought-tolerant. It will only need watering during dry, hot spells. Tolerates even in the poorest soils.
  • Well-suited for use as edging, groundcover, or in containers. It also works well in alpine-style or rock gardens.
  • Native to Europe and western Asia.
